Southern Hampshire CAMRA
Southern Hampshire CAMRA held its first meeting in 1974 at the Bay Tree (now sadly closed & converted to flats) in Southampton.
There are currently more than 95,000 members of CAMRA,
the highest number ever, of whom around 1200 live in the
Southern Hampshire Branch area.
The Southern Hampshire Branch area includes Eastleigh,
Southampton, Winchester, Romsey, the New Forest,
Fordingbridge and Bishop's Waltham, and is part of the
Wessex Region of CAMRA.
The Southern Hampshire Branch is a highly socially active branch and
our activities include brewery visits, walkabouts,
socials, business meetings and of course running and visiting
beer festivals. If you'd like to know more about our activities, please
visit our mailing lists page
and sign up for our low volume email mailing lists.
The Southern Hampshire Branch represents CAMRA's current campaigns pressing for movement towards the
harmonisation of beer duties across the EC, pub hours reform and the
introduction of legislation to ensure that customers get a
full measure each time they buy a drink.
CAMRA's Mission
CAMRA's mission is to act as champion of the consumer in relation
to the UK and European beer and drinks industry. It aims to:
- Maintain consumer rights
- Promote quality, choice and value for money
- Support the public house as a focus of community life
- Campaign for greater appreciation of traditional beers, ciders and
perries as part of national heritage and culture.
On a national level, CAMRA has succeeded in many of its campaigns including the
introduction of more flexible opening hours and the
opportunity for many licensees to offer their customers a
guest beer.
Each year CAMRA publishes the
Good Beer Guide
which lists the best pubs in the country and a comprehensive list of
breweries.
Beer Guides
The branch has a small library of beer guides, which are available
for members to borrow for a modest fee. The library is
held by Ann Binns and Chris Brown, and is available at
their shop Bitter Virtue 70, Cambridge Road,
Southampton, SO14 6WQ, phone 023 8055 4881. Shop hours
are 10:30-8pm Wednesday-Saturday & 10:30 until 2 on
Sunday. If you have any spare guides, any donations will
be gratefully accepted.
