Southern Hampshire CAMRA Press Release

For Immediate Release 04/06/2003
Real Ale In Vogue At Southampton Guildhall

The organisers of the 7th Southampton Beer Festival are hoping that pop star Madonna's recently revealed love of real ale will attract new customers to the popular three day event. The American superstar announced on a recent edition of 'Tonight with Jonathan Ross' that she often enjoyed a half of Timothy Taylor's beer. Customers at this year's Southampton Beer Festival will be able to sample two different beers from the award winning Yorkshire brewery.

Festival organiser Rob Whatley said, "We hope that Madonna's comments will encourage more younger customers to attend the festival to sample the delights of real ale. Although around a third of customers at previous festivals have been female, real ale is often perceived as a drink only consumed by older men. Madonna's endorsement can help to dispel those stereotypes and increase sales of real ale to a new generation of drinkers. There will be a wide variety of beer styles on offer and the experienced bar staff will be pleased to help new customers find one to their liking."

Southampton Beer Festival is organised by the Southern Hampshire branch of CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale. It takes place on Thursday to Saturday, 5th to 7th June.
